In complex charts it may not always be easy to select the specific chart element you want to delete or format. This is especially true when trying to select a specific data point, for example, one small dot out of fifty.
Here are a couple of tips to help with selecting chart elements. If you’re having a hard time selecting a large chart element, select the entire chart object by clicking its outside edge, then on Chart Tools, Layout Ribbon, look to the far right to see a drop-down list that enables you to select major chart elements.
If you find it difficult to select a small chart element, such as one specific data point out of many, or when data points overlap, then use the following technique. Select the largest element, for example the line showing one data series. Now press the left or right arrow keys to move through each data point in the data series. Pressing the up or down arrow keys will move between chart elements.
