Set the Default Chart Template

Excel

Excel’s default template initially creates charts as column charts with a legend. The original default chart is the chart you get when you select data and press either Alt+F1 or F11. However, you can make the default chart template whatever you like, including a chart that has custom formatting.

If you want to set as a default chart one of Excel’s standard charts without formatting then,
1. On the Insert tab, in the Charts group, select Other Charts, and All Charts Types.
2. Select one of the standard chart types such as Stacked Column or Line with Markers.
3. Click the Set as Default Chart button and click Ok.

The next time you create a chart with Alt+F1 (chart on the sheet) or F11 (chart on a new chart sheet) this chart type will be used as the default.

If you have created one or more chart templates including formatting as well as adding or deleting chart elements, then use the following steps to set both a custom chart type and format as the default,
1. On the Insert tab, in the Charts group, select Other Charts, and All Charts Types.
2. Click the Templates button to display the custom chart templates you have previously created.

Create a collection of chart templates of those types you use most frequently.

3. Select the template of the chart type and format you want as the default and click the Set as Default Chart button. If you have a couple of templates that look similar hover your mouse over the icon to see the name you gave the template.
4. Click Ok.
