Connect Emotion and Analytics To Get Action and Impact

You can have great analysis and good answers, but if you can’t communicate and create action your work could be futile.

I used to make presentations with the attitude, “Here’s the numbers. Here’s the decision I’d recommend. Questions?” That style doesn’t cut it if you want to make an impact. You have to connect the analytical and emotional sides of the brain.

There are three ways to connect analytics and emotion,
1. Infect your audience with your own high energy and emotion.
2. Share stories that connect the audience’s emotion with your analysis and conclusion.
3. Display or evoke visuals that connect the data to an outcome.

If you want to see one of the great masters who captivates audiences with all three techniques, watch the incredible Hans Rosling present data. If I’m not mistaken, he’s the highest viewed and highest rated speaker at TED Talks and has spoken at TED many times. can’t give you steps 1 or 2, but it does make it a heck of a lot easier and cheaper to do step 3.
