2023 Forecasts

Even a Soft Landing for the Economy May Be Uneven

New York Times, Talmon Joseph Smith, January 6, 2023

Don’t bet on averages. Although the “average” forecast appears to be a mild recession in the US, the latest numbers look like it will be a K-shaped recession. The top arm of the K is from retrenchment, then a return to normal for large businesses (with deep pockets) and white-collar professionals. The bottom arm of the K is a deep recession with a hard impact on retail, small businesses, and lower-income workers. Which niches and market segments are you serving?

Don’t despair just yet. All the changes in white-collar jobs appear to be job shifting, not job loss. See the first link above, "Even a Soft Landing for the Economy..." and a K-shaped recession.
